A fire in a Birmingham primary school has led to a full-scale evacuation of around 600 children, who were taking their lunchtime break.

More than 60 firefighters were called to the scene after the roof caught fire at Harborne Primary School yesterday (April 27th), reports the Birmingham Post regional newspaper.

Pupils and staff were moved to a nearby bingo hall and church, where they waited until they were picked up. The firefighters battled the blaze for around four hours.

Nearby streets Station Road, Emerson Road and Wentworth Road had to be closed because of the fire, while residents and businesses were left without fire after a nearby substation was shut down.

A sufficient and suitable Fire Risk Assessment must be carried out on all commercial properties in England and Wales, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

If this Fire Risk Assessment is carried out insufficiently, the Responsible Person can face a fine or two years in prison.
